I told a friend that I had finally found a couple of dresses I really liked. Would she like to see what they look like online?
Her eyes went wide in terror. “No!”
“Buh?” I stammered, a bit bewildered. Usually people at least, you know. Play along.
“Nobody can see what your dress looks like before your wedding day!” she exclaimed. Underneath that smile, she was dead serious. “The only people who saw my dress before my wedding were my mom and my maid of honor. It has to be a secret. It has to stay a surprise until you walk down the aisle. Or else it’ll be bad.”
“Oh,” I said, letting this information simmer in my brain for a little while. “Well, that’s not going to work for me. I’ve already shown the pictures to my fiance.”
She did a facepalm.
“So we’re screwed, huh?” I asked.
“You guys are totally getting a divorce,” she replied.
HAR.
Do you have any wedding superstitions?
I have no problem with any of my friends or bridesmaids etc seeing the dress before the wedding. The dress excites me; there is no way I could keep it to myself.
I’d never show the Groomie though, and he definitely doesn’t want to see it.
My fiance and I are shopping together for our wedding day outfits. Sometimes he picks out nicer stuff for me than I pick for myself, probably because I hate shopping and trying things on. I don’t think we have any superstitions, except no one is allowed to say “well, what if it rains?” I don’t want to be jinxed since we have no plan B, except to huddle under the park pavilion.
My husband saw my in what ended up being my wedding dress. I kinda was trying it on as a joke and thought there was no harm in him seeing it, but then I bounced out of the dressing room, and that one ended up being “it”. Oh well. After that point, we both were open about the apparel stuff. I went with him when we got his suit and gave feedback. It wasn’t what I expected to do, but I am so glad I chose a dress he really liked to. My other top contender…well, he just didn’t think I looked as good in it… SO, it worked for us. 🙂 And we still did a first look, but it was more just about having those few special minutes alone with each other than revealing our outfits.
Ha I hate this your wedding must be a surprise nonsense. I am chatty. I like to share.
I am very superstitious! I know it is lame but I can’t help myself. It’s also so interesting to me how much superstitions vary. Like I definitely don’t want my fiance to see my dress before the wedding day, but I would never have thought it should be kept secret from everyone else! And I know a lot of people do the four “somethings,” but when I give brides a sixpence for their shoe (from the same poem), they’re like, “Uhh… I have to walk on an out-of-circulation piece of foreign currency all day WHY exactly?”
Also I totally believe it is good luck to have rain on your wedding day, even though that superstition was totally transparently invented as a consolation prize for people getting married during shitty weather.
Hmmm. I guess your friend would be especially horrified to know that I took Tony dress shopping?
There was a woman at the dress shop who was horrified to learn that he was my fiance, too. She made a shocked :O face and said, “You’re not supposed to see the dress!” He replied, “It’s okay. I’ve already seen everything anyway.”
But, yeah, I’m doing the 4 somethings, and I’m a little bit superstitious about my jewelry. I would like to wear my mother’s pearls, but I won’t because I wore them in my first wedding and now they feel like bad juju.
This made me crack up- for my sisters wedding a few years ago, For everything we deemed “nontraditional” or something that goes against normal superstition, we knocked off 5 years of her marriage. A good way to keep the giggles up while getting ready 🙂
While I like to call myself modern and not all that superstitious, I must admit that I do adhere to some of the traditions that come with the wedding thing. /giggles I don’t mind showing my dress to some of my closer friends, but am definitely NOT going to show it to my fiance! 🙂 I don’t necessarily believe it will bring bad luck, but I just like to keep it a surprise! Will love to see the look on his face when he gets to see me in full wedding attire: my lovely dress, hair nicely done, some make-up etcetc.
@ hitchdied : I do know bout the 4 somethings (thats the new, old, borrowed and blue thing right?) but whats about that sixpence?? Would love to know more bout that 🙂 (though while I am planning on keeping up with the 4 somethings tradition, I can just imagine for my bridal party to say the same about the coins hehe)
@ Sarah : I think tis great actually that you took your man dress shoping!! I woulda loved to see the womans face /giggles
