You guys. Can I tell you something?
(I guess I can. This is my blog, after all. I could tell you anything. For example, I could tell you that you have a squirrel on your head, and that wouldn’t even be true, unless I am grossly underestimating the kind of lifestyle you lead. But I could still tell you that. Because I am entirely in control of what goes on this blog. I could publish a post that simply contained the letter “r” repeated over and over and over again, like “rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr” — much like the sound, now that I think of it, that a rabid squirrel atop your head might make — and nobody could stop me. )
Ahem.
This is a really crazy week. I took on some side work, because I guess the full-time job and the wedding planning just wasn’t filling all of the hours in my day. For example, I was still finding time to sleep. I know! What a lazy jerk.
But yeah. Since I don’t have time to write a “real” post right now, I thought I’d just pop in and say hi really quick. Hi! Hello to those of you who are still around, anyway. Seeing as how it’s a big holiday weekend in the U.S. and Canada, I wouldn’t be surprised if many of you were totally ignoring the internet right now in favor of sitting outside on a lawn chair drinking a chilled beverage. Or getting married.
Oh yes, that’s right. I am thinking of two people in particular right now: Nina, who comments here regularly and who doesn’t have her own blog, but I sure wish she did; and kc, of Shiny Pretty Bits. Guys, Nina is getting married this Saturday. This! Saturday! And kc is getting married on Monday. MONDAY! I have never met either of these ladies, yet I am on pins and needles for them. That is the power of the internet, folks. Say what you will about the ills of the digital age. Say what you will about the erosion of interpersonal contact. I say this here community is a total win. You guys are all a win.
I started this blog almost a year ago. I started it because I thought it would be a great way to document this process and to connect with others.* Actually, Angie put it best recently when she said that so many of us blog about our weddings “to share, to be heard, to support and to be supported.” I don’t think I quite understood the support thing until just a few short months ago. The word blessing sounds kinda smarmy, but really, I can’t think of a better word than that to describe how much of a blessing it’s been to find all of you. You’ve talked me down from the crazy ledge, and you’ve offered your opinions when I’ve had too many options on the table. I love posting just to see what you’ll write back. I love feeling that, for better or for worse, we’re all in this together. And I love reading your own blogs — those of you who have them — because it’s such a thrill to see where you’re all at in this process.
So, before you crack open that beverage and kick off your weekend, I just want to say: Thanks. And Nina, kc: Good luck. Please let us know what it’s like on the other side.

* And I can’t lie: I also started it because, deep down, I was secretly hoping someone would email me one day and say, “Hey! We like your bizarre, erratic writing SO MUCH, that we’d like to offer you an annual six-figure salary to write a new blog post every single day! Actually, scratch that! Every other day would be just fine! And you can still take all the major holidays off!” I’m still holding onto my dream, and yet that inbox remains empty.
Hearts and darts! I like your bizarre and erratic writing SO MUCH. Maybe someday I’ll strike oil and I can give out blogging grants? In the meantime, have a great holiday weekend.
Confession: I googled “hearts and darts” to try to figure out if it the term references something specific, but all I could find out is that in some newspapers in the American south, they have a section named “Hearts & Darts” in which readers can write in and give their own versions of Stephen Colbert’s “Tip of the Hat, Wag of the Finger.”
So, I think I’m still confused.
But I still like you SO MUCH!
It is something Collin says to me! I had no idea it was a folsky “cheers and jeers” type thing.
Since I have a drink in my hand, I propose a toast: Here’s to kc and Nina and their soon-to-be-spouses (!). May this weekend bring as little stress as possible and lots of happy, memorable wedding stories to tell in the months, years and decades to follow.
And here’s to lyn, who brought and keeps us here because she’s so damn funny.
Cheers!
*clink*
I love your toast! I shall have to clink you back when I am home from work and have an appropriate beverage in my hand (water just doesn’t do the trick at times like these).
Cheers to Nina, kc, and everyone else getting married this weekend, indeed.
p.s. I wanna tell Kim that I adore all of the comments I see you leaving on blogs and I try to write on yours… but the stupid govt won’t let me look at live journal at work 🙁 the nerve of these people!
Congrats Nina and kc! I’m getting married in 9 days, and I alternate between totally freaking out about it and wishing it were here already so I could just throw away the rest of the to-do list…
And congrats to you too! You’re almost there, that is freaking crazy!
Oh wow. Me and the squirrel on my head are totally tearing up right now. Well I’m tearing up, the squirrel is just freaking out. RRRRRRRRRRRRRR. Totally. Crazy squirrel. I took on side projects on top of the full time job and wedding planning cause it was too hard to say no to extra money. I forgot about the having to work for said extra money part though. Details.
This community IS amazing. I’d go crazy without you all. Now, only the squirrel is crazy, so it’s all good.
Squirrels: Untapped wedding hair accessory. New trend? Oh yes. Don’t forget you saw it here first. Thank kc for being the pioneer and true inspiration.
PS – Don’t forget to feed him! Her! I don’t know how to tell what’s what, in squirrel land.
lyyyyyyyyyyyynnnnnnnnnnnn! *tear* fekkin love you. and i love this post- so fluid and lovely. just let it all out girl!
And two more things:
Yay for Nina!!! Congrats! Congrats! Congrats!
Yay for kc!!!! Knock ’em dead, baby girl!
Ooooh… I’m getting all sorts of warm and fuzzy right now. Not sure if it’s the wine or this post. Or both. 🙂
I have the perfect squirrel in mind. He’s (she’s?) been digging around my yard lately.
Yay for kc and Nina!
How ridiculously weird/fun would it be to have a meet-up someday? Wedding blogger blind date bachelorette party something or other.
Oh, and the smarminess of “blessing.” I get that. When T and I first reconnected, he kept talking about how *heartening* it was to know that we were still on the same wavelength, and some other mushy stuff. Don’t know why, but I hated *heartening.* It’s such an insipid and inadequate word for a feeling that was much bigger and bolder than that word could ever express.
warm frickin fuzzies galore!!! Good luck to all the ladies and gents marrying this weekend! I hope it is superb!
And yes, the blog community is super awesome. I never thought I’d read blogs…let alone stalk a million of them…let alone write my own! Shows what I know.
I just wrote an e-mail to my future MIL entitled “How blogs saved our wedding” because she threw out some cheap shot about how I shouldn’t spend so much time on wedding blogs. And I had to correct her and defend all you lovely people and tell her that without the sane support I’ve received….I’m pretty sure I’d either have 1) freaked out and eloped 2) freaked out and checked into a mental hospital shivering in the corner about “10 ways to wow my guests”! icky. In other words, blog land – I love you!
Yes, just the other day I was reflecting on the sense on community I have from blogs, and some blog friendships that have developed over the last months. Pretty amazing stuff, considering that before I began blogging, I would have not expected digital connections to be too substantial…. A happy realization! 🙂
Can’t talk now, I have to feed my head squirrel. He keeps rrrrrrr-ing at me.
rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr – shit how did that squirrel get up there?!? well hot wedding accessory it is.
Thanks Lyn. Seriously. I was about to head out for my last day of prep – final dress fitting, getting nails done, picking up flowers, oh and then going to the rehearsal dinner where I have to act normal and refrain from running around screaming RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR which is really what I want to do, but of course I had to pop in here first and I’m always glad when I do, but extra so today because now I’ve got an awesome dose of encouragement from all of you. So thank you.
Toast to sane women coming together amongst the wedding madness!! I’ll report back from the other side.
hope your crazy schedule becomes a little elss crazy soon! and hooray for shiny pretty bits & congrats to Nina! I adore all the blogs I read and it feels so awesome to be a part of such a great blogging community.
p.s. i would totally pay you to write your blog if i had any spare moola. i love reading your posts!
You make me happy. The blogging world makes me happy. Weddings of bloggers and commenters I “talk” with make me happy (Yay KC and Nina!) Also, I now want a squirrel accessory.
Isaiah and I are in a similar spot, we just took on a bunch of freelance projects and everything else seems to be paused. I hope things calm down and that you enjoy that nice fat paycheck and sense of accomplishment after you’re finished with the extra projects! Best of luck to Nina & KC!
I agree completely. This wedding blog community is amazing and filled with amazing people who offer amazing support. I’m so glad I’ve found your blog and am able to share in your planning, difficulty, and joys. Cheers!
