As we keep plugging away at our task list, I’ve discovered the only parts of wedding-related planning that really get me hot and bothered anymore are the parts that are entirely unrelated to the actual wedding. Namely, the bachelorette party and the honeymoon.
I’ve made some real strides lately in planning both of these little nuggets of sheer, unadulterated fun, and let me tell you, they’ve been a welcome respite from the kind of wedding stuff that makes me want to lie down on the floor and pitch a feet-kicking, eardrum-piercing fit. Since the anticipation of the bach party and the honeymoon is currently making me feel like frolicking around the room in deranged ecstasy before making out with a total stranger* from the sheer joy of it all, I want to TELL YOU ALL ABOUT THEM. You cannot stop me!
THE BACHELORETTE
The bach party will be in August in Palm Springs. PALM EM-EFFING SPRINGS. In what is probably the only wedding blog industry-related thing I will ever do, I am going to attend The Flashdance’s once-monthly Sunday night dance party at the Ace Hotel. Yeah, THAT Ace Hotel.** I am beyond giddy about this. I started following The Flashdance’s blog before I even got engaged, and I love the mixes he puts up on his site. So this dance party is truly going to be one of the highlights of the weekend.
Other than the dancing, I’m not sure what else we’ll do besides drink and lay next to the pool. Except go bowling. And get dressed up in the ugliest, cheesiest thriftstore bridesmaid dresses we can find and go out on the town at night. Holy balls, I think I’m in heaven.
THE HONEYMOON
I’ve mentioned before that we’re going to Vancouver. We were mainly able to do this because the beau used his frequent flier miles accumulated at work to purchase our plane tickets to the tune of $42 each. I know. We totally deserve to be punched in the face.
Once we arrive in Canada, we’ll drive to a tiny town called Ucluelet on the west coast of Vancouver Island. The cabins we’re staying at have a “bear aware orientation” at check in, and despite delusions to the contrary, this process apparently has nothing to do with familiarizing guests with the full list of Care Bears characters.*** Additionally, these cabins have adopted a green cleaning program in which they use only biodegradable citrus cleaner to sanitize the rooms. I like that.
We’re spending three full days on Vancouver Island, for which I’m grateful. I’m sure that after the whirlwind of the wedding all I’ll want to do is find the nearest horizontal surface and collapse upon it, which is why a quiet, remote setting with a view will be bliss. Something like this, perhaps.
Yes, I believe this will do nicely.
I’m optimistic that by the second day I can find the strength to remain upright for more than ten minutes at a time, so that we can go kayaking around the inlets and enjoy the natural splendor of the outdoors. After we tire of the outdoors, we can retreat indoors to our 2-person Jacuzzi tub overlooking the water. OH YES. THE JACUZZI TUB IS THE SOLE REASON WE CHOSE THIS CABIN.
The yellow hutch may have had something to do with it, though.
After our time on the island, we’ll travel back to the city of Vancouver for four full days of sightseeing and eating very, very well. And ziplining! And eating some more. Seriously, this town has some good eats. The beau and I started a shared Google Map and whenever we find a new restaurant or bar that looks good, we just add it to the mix. So far we’ve got a bunch of Thai, Vietnamese, Japanese, and Indian joints on the map. I cannot wait to stuff myself full of delicious, delicious food.
When we’re not out roaming, we’ll be cozying up in the L’Hermitage Hotel. We love this place because 1) it’s right downtown within walking distance of tons of activities, 2) it has a pool and free internet, 3) it has an in-room washer and dryer set,**** and 4) we are not paying for it. That’s right. The beau’s parents offered this place to us as their wedding gift to us. Yeah. Feel free to punch us in the face again. Seriously though, when they gave us this gift, we were floored. Not only is it incredibly generous, it enabled us to splurge a little on our cabin on Vancouver Island.
So yeah. That’s it. I am so. Freaking. Excited.
What’s floating your boat these days? What are you planning/did you do for your bach parties and honeymoons, respectively?

* Awkward. Sorry, beau.
** Hipsters ho!
*** My parents, as I imagine parents are wont to do, still make jokes involving the cartoons I obsessively watched when I was a kid. I remember one visit home after college when we went for a drive out in the West Virginia countryside, where we proceeded to be ogled by the locals as if we were circus freaks. My mother declared that they were giving us the “Care Bear Stare,” and immediately followed it up by shouting at the passenger window, “Care Bears, prepare to stare!” I’m sure it must be a survival strategy; a way of dealing with all the inane children’s television programming to which they were exposed. I mean, as opposed to outright lunacy. Right?
**** This is INSANELY VALUABLE for longish trips. Insanely!
I…. I… I want to move into that Lobby. Specifically the floor. I could die happy if I had that floor. And as for everything else (Flashdance! Ace Hotel! Bad dresses! Rustic-located-but-amenity-FULL Cabin! Foooooood!) I am happy for you. Oh so happy.
Maybe I can put that floor in my pocket when we leave and take it back to the U.S. with me. They probably won’t notice, right?
bachelorette, we rented a hotel room in downtown LA, had dinner at one my favorite places (RIVERA. you must try.) and went mixologist hopping. surprisingly, no debauchery, no hangover, just good memories.
honeymoon, which i will be leaving for in a few weeks… my dearest mom, she racked up so many miles that she got me and the husb free tickets to japan. so we will be hopping around the island, visiting relatives, collecting wedding money, and hopefully sightseeing on the side. so. very. excited.
but. ACE HOTEL? AND L’HERMITAGE? the design freak in me just squealed like a fat kid in front of cake.
I have officially added these cabins to our “must go list” (that keeps getting longer and longer) – what an awesome awesome honeymoon you have planned. when bear awareness is involved – that’s badass!
and the bach will be too much fun, always nice night out for a good dance party with the girls!
I’m with you tho – our honeymoon is almost exactly 1 year away, not much booked but all I do is pour over blogs, photos and books on Portugal. And trust me, there is still 1001 things left to plan/book/figure out for the two wedding celebrations that have to happen before then!
Going to a cabin in a remote pretty place is my favorite vacation. Probably because that’s what I did with my family every summer growing up.
So, um, yeah. Except for that bit about Kayaking, that’s pretty much our honeymoon, too. Weird, that.

Holy crap. I got my honeymoon in YOUR honeymoon. And now it’s a delicious honeymoon sandwich. Whatever, uh, that means. So I should totally pass on some of our favorite things to you after we go, then?
Yes, please! Seeing as how we don’t have to book anything for like 8-9 months.
The Sweetie and I went to Vancouver about two years ago and while we were there, I was trying to figure out how I could live there forever. It’s beautiful, clean, and the people are so nice. There are so many things to see and do, and so many lovely foods to eat.
Our wedding will take place in a little over four months and so far I’m loving the planning process. I found your blog through another blog (can’t remember which now, sorry) and I’ve been enjoying it ever since.
Our honeymoon will be a short local trip – maybe Asheville, NC – because we’re getting married the Sunday before Thanksgiving and I work in retail. There’s no way in hell I can get that much time off after the wedding. It’s okay, though, because we plan to take a tour of the Pacific Northwest with a stay at Yellowstone for our honeymoon next summer. It’ll give us time to save some cash and work out a plan. I can’t imagine trying to plan a trip while planning the biggest party of my life. Kudos to you for keeping it together!
Bach party? I’m 36. Not sure I’ll be doing one.. if I do, it’ll be a low-key kind of thing. Or, maybe we’ll go hit the casinos in Tunica. Whatever the girls come up with will probably be fine with me.
I just drank an energy type drink. I’m blaming that for this marathon long comment.
Happy Planning!
Ok this is going to sound weird, but I’m pretty sure Brandon (aka Jason Priestley) from 90210 owns those cabins you are staying at. I recognized the front of the cabins from a slideshow on MSN I saw last year about celebrity owned restaurants and hotels. If it’s not the one that you are staying at, I did a quick google search and it is one in Ucluelet. Awesome!
Are you SERIOUS. That is… kind of awesome. Thanks for the tip!
My bach party and shower were last weekend, and it was effing fantastic. Know why? a) Because everyone there was amazingly awesome and 2) Because I DID NOT HAVE TO PLAN A FREAKING THING. We went out to dinner and then a dance party (a few stories from that night, fo shizzle).
For our post-wedding getaway, I think we’re going to take a small trip immediately after the wedding to Nags Head, NC, and then plan for a larger trip to South America after Christmas (pesky northern/southern hemisphere opposite season craziness). I cannot wait to sit. And read. And sex. Next to/on/near a beach. Just the two of us. No work. No checklist. Aaaaaahhhhhhh . . .
The ACE is bitchin’, lyn. Some of the best poolside music in town, and the free beach cruisers are a nice bonus. In fact, 2E’s is heading there Monday with some gal pals. I have no doubt you’ll have a kickass bach party.
Oooh…sounds fabulous. 🙂 And I used to love Care Bears, specifically Birthday Bear.
I can’t believe you’re planning your own bachelorette party! I think your maid of honor is supposed to do that for you, but what an awesome plan! I totally want to stay at the Palm Springs Ace someday, I just have to figure out how to make it happen and who to take (I just don’t think my hubs will appreciate it the same way – the dance party is just not his thing.)
One of my brigadiers mostly has the reins, but I was involved on the front end of planning where, when, and who. And I’m so excited to be staying at the Ace! We’ll probably only stay there one night, and at another hotel nearby the other nights to save money, but still. That one night is good enough for me!
OHHHHHHHHHHH MAAAAAAAH GAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!!
$42???!!!!
Ace hotel???!!!!!
Awesome cabin in Canada, eh???!!!!!
You totally deserve all this awesome stuff. Except the bears- unless they decide to stay far far away and are the picnic basket stealing kind and not the eat your face kind.
p.s. For the past few days I have totally been wearing the WTF face. Totally. How to make it go away? 🙂
So fun! I agree the accompanying parties/vacations are quite exciting. great minds think alike. I’m going to the ace palm springs next month with my maid of honor for girl’s night. and we’re totally going to canada for our honeymoon too. I’m with you on the being horizontal in a remote location. We might be in Victoria, and we were also looking at Pender Island which has pretty much nothing but the hotel.
